Join NPAM for a half-day dermatology focused skills session. This hands-on workshop will teach two valuable skills for NP practice including: an introduction to dermoscopy as well a performing simple biopsies that can be done in the primary care setting. Participants will gain an understanding of how to perform dermoscopy, indications and procedure for simple biopsies, followed by hands-on time to practice biopsy and use of a dermoscopy. All supplies will be provided.

Community Psychiatrist
Dr. Jessica Kreviazuk is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, and has clinical roles within the adult mental health program of the WRHA. She completed her undergraduate degrees (BSc and MD) at the University of Manitoba and then completed a Residency in Psychiatry and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She has worked as a consulting psychiatrist within the Shared Care Mental Health program for the past 12 years where she provides clinical assessments to primary care providers. She is actively involved in teaching senior level psychiatry residents.
Dr. Elsie Duff
Dr. Elsie Duff is a family all ages nurse practitioner (MB & ON), associate professor, and research scientist with the University of Manitoba who works as a virtual primary care NP with TELUS Health Virtual Care. Elsie has experience in the delivery of telecare in rural and remote communities providing satellite radio or telephone healthcare before the advances in todays video access options.
Monica Kalar RN(NP)
Monica Kalar is a Nurse Practitioner (BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, NU) at Cleveland Clinic Canada and Telus Health Virtual Care. Ms. Kalar has experience in a wide variety of clinical settings, including primary care, chronic disease management, pediatrics, geriatrics, immunizations, newborn and maternal health assessments. Her clinical expertise includes diagnosing and treating common conditions such as viral infections, upper respiratory tract infection, genitourinary infections, dermatologic conditions, as well as prescriptions refills. Monica has a particular interest in women’s health and family planning and is skilled in pediatric health, providing holistic family-centered care to her patients. Ms. Kalar is dedicated to working with her patients to help educate them about their physical and mental health conditions and empower them with the tools they need to feel their best.
Heidi Pharand-Joven RN(NP)
Heidi Pharand-Joven is a Nurse Practitioner (MB, AB) at PurposeMed, FREDDIE. Ms Pharand-Joven also works for Indigenous Services Canada and AFM. Heidi has experience providing a wide variety of care including primary care (family all ages), chronic disease management, prenatal care, mental health, addictions, harm reduction and has primarily worked within corrections and northern remote environments. Her clinical expertise with FREDDIE consists of harm reduction practices including STBBI testing and management and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis counseling and treatment. Heidi has a particular interest in harm reduction and addiction medicine, including a passion for providing care to underserved northern remote Indigenous communities.
Navdeep Tangri, MD, PhD, FRCPC
Seven Oaks Hospital Chronic Disease Innovation Centre
University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Dr. Tangri is an attending physician and Professor in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine and the Rady Faculty of Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Tangri’s research program is clinical, translational and focused on improving clinical decision making for patients with advanced chronic kidney disease. He developed and validated the Kidney Failure Risk Equation to predict the need for dialysis in patients with CKD, and is presently engaged in multiple validation and implementation exercises to increase the uptake of the KFRE.
In addition, Dr. Tangri is conducting a large prospective study on frailty, physical and cognitive function in advanced CKD, as well as leading a multinational randomized trial on the safety and efficacy of a new therapy in this population. He has published over 300 manuscripts, presented at multiple national and international scientific meetings, and is a recipient of the CIHR New Investigator Award and a CIHR Foundation grant.
Carol Hitchon MD FRCPC MSc
Dr Hitchon is a clinical rheumatologist affiliated with the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg Manitoba and an Associate Professor with the University of Manitoba. Dr Hitchon’s research interests are directed towards understanding the pathogenesis and prognosis of autoimmune rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, with the aim of improving clinical outcomes for people with these conditions. She is also involved in collaborative initiatives aimed to improve access to rheumatology care for people living in East Africa.
Rochelle Van De Velde MD. FRCPC.
Dr. Rochelle Van De Velde completed her Medical Degree at the University of Manitoba in 2004. She then went on to complete a residency in both Family Medicine and Dermatology at the University of British Columbia.
She is currently in private practice at the Academy Skin Centre at 500 Academy Road in Winnipeg seeing both Adult and Pediatric Medical Dermatology. She also lectures for both the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatric and Child Health at the University of Manitoba.
Dr. Justin Ling MD FRCPC
Dr. Justin Ling was born, raised, and trained in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He completed Pharmacy and Medicine, then Internal Medicine and Adult Respirology at the University of Manitoba. He works both in community and in hospital practice. He has recently opened a community-based pulmonary function test lab. He has clinical interests in end-stage lung diseases and pulmonary rehabilitation.
Dr. Shayne Reitmeier
Dr. Shayne Reitmeier is a rural physician working in Southern Health. He has been recognized both locally and nationally for his leadership and advocacy. Dr. Reitmeier completed his education at the University of Manitoba, and was a 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient. He is one of the only physicians in rural Manitoba who visibly and proudly provides consults for gender-affirming care, healthy sexuality, and harm reduction.
Dr. Jonathan Gabor
Dr. Jonathan Gabor is an internist with post-graduate subspecialty training in several areas of cardiometabolic disease including heart failure, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, metabolic chronic kidney disease, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and obstructive sleep apnea. He practices cardiovascular and cardiometabolic medicine in Winnipeg and the Interlake Health Region. He is board-certified in obesity from the American Board of Obesity Medicine, a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension from the American Society of Hypertension, a Specialist in Heart Failure from the European Society of Cardiology, and completed board certification training at the U.S. National Lipid Association. He is an author on the Hypertension Canada guidelines and the resistant hypertension guidelines chapter, and the recent Canadian Cardiovascular Society Cardiorenal Risk Reduction guidelines. He is passionate about knowledge dissemination and guideline development, speaking locally and nationally to diverse audiences of health care providers, and serving on guidelines development committees and subcommittees of various national and international organizations including the Canadian Heart Failure Society, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, the Canadian Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, Hypertension Canada, the American National Lipid Association, and the European Society of Cardiology.
